Compared to the allied soldiers at Gallipoli, the Turkish uniforms were of poor quality. Even at the beginning of the campaign, summer and winter uniforms were mixed, often tattered and torn, with patches made from sandbags. Footwear was varied, at times only a piece of hide held together by string.
As part of the German Military Mission, the Turks were well equipped with Mausser rifles, bombs (hand-grenades) and artillery. Infantry ammunition was plentiful, however supplies of artillery ammunition were often inadequate, limiting the strategic advantage of Turkish artillery positions. At Lone Pine the Turks had the advantage of a plentiful supply of bombs, used to deadly effect in counter-attacks.
