About Dioramas

Dioramas or 'picture models' as they were at first called, have been a part of the Memorial's displays since its inception shortly after the First World War. The use of dioramas was suggested by the war artist Will Dyson and the official historian Charles Bean, who wanted to give a more vivid impression of the war than could be conveyed by photographs or paintings.

The Lone Pine diorama was constructed between 1924 and 1927 by the sculptor W. Wallace Anderson and the artist Louis McCubbin. It was based on detailed historical research into the appearance of the landscape and the troops involved.
